Psychonauts 2: A Great Return

I have to say I wasn’t expecting to like this as much as I am. My wife was the bigger fan of the first game, in fact I don’t remember if I ever finished it. But this sequel. Do you recall, days ago, when sequels came out and they actually were bigger better versions of the previous game? I had gotten used to the annual cash-in, slap a new number on the box, and call it a day practice of most game companies. I think that is what’s hitting me the most about Psychonauts 2. This continues the story and adds so much more all with a refinement we’ve come to expect in modern games.

Did I mention the controls? Who doesn’t hate screwing up a jump in a game? In P2 when you screw up, you know instantly why you did and what to do next time to avoid it. So many games get that one simple thing wrong. In the same way combat is smooth, accurate, if you don’t rush it, and very satisfying. I’m playing on and Xbox Series X so the visuals are top notch. I love this cartoony art style and it just looks awesome on my 4K tv.

Full disclosure I was an early backer on Kickstarter, so I was really looking forward to the finished game. Doublefine delivered on all fronts. Let this be a lesson and a return to form of great platforming adventures. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some emotional baggage to clear out.
